Learn all the lingo you need to blaze with the best cannabis connoisseurs. From the definition of a dimebag or doobie, to the difference between indica and sativa -- we've got you covered with all the nuanced terminology the cannabis community has cultivated over time.

Plant Terms

Clone

Cloning is a process in which a grower cuts a branch off a plant and grows an genetically identical plant. Mother plants are often cultivated for cuts of these clones.

Female

Female plants are responsible for producing the nugs we smoke. They're characterized by the formation of two stigmas (pistils) on branch nodes and tips a week or two into the flowering cycle.

Greenhouse

A greenhouse is an outdoor building in which plants are grown. Commonly used in agriculture, they're incredibly effective at managing light and temperature. Also a popular seed company, Green House Seed Company, home of popular strains such as White Widow and White Rhino.

Hybrid

A hybrid cannabis plant is one grown from pollinating one strain with another. This can also refer to strain that's sativa and indica, usually at a set ratio(50/50, 80/20, etc).

Hydro

Hydro refers to hydroponically grown ganja, where the cannabis is cultivated in nutrient enriched water rather than nutrient packed soil. The plants are grown with their roots suspended in the water, or inside a soilless medium such as rockwool, coir, clay pebbles, etc.

Indica

Cannabis indica are plants that tend to grow 6-8ft in height, though generally shorter. It's leaves are short, but have wide green fingers. As it matures, the leaves develop more purple. It features short branches with dense nugs. And the nugs are quite stinky! The indica high is a "body high". It's relaxing, and often accompanied by a body buzz. It's incredibly useful for pain relief and insomnia. An excellent night-time smoke.

Kush

Kush is a subset of strains of cannabis indica. They originate from the middle-east and India, with it's name derived from the "Hindu Kush" mountain range.

Male

Male plants grow tall and stout, with few leaves. During the flowering phase, the male produces pollen sacs (or balls, snoogins), rather than stigmas/pistils like the female. Generally they're grown for strain development, as they do not produce as many buds as a female -- and more importantly, risk pollinating female plants with their presence.

Nutes / Nutrients

Nutrients are minerals that your cannabis plant requires for growth. The common nutrients for cannabis are nitrogen, phosphate, potasssium, and calcium.

Orange / Red / Purple/ White Hairs

The orange, purple, and white hairs on nugs are the dried out pistils of a cannabis plant. White hairs represents a plant that was picked prematurely. Orange and red hairs signify the plant was allowed to fully flower. Purple hairs are the product of genetic mutation.

Pistils

Pistils are the long thin hairs that stick out of the buds(or nugs) of the cannabis plant. They're produced in the flowering stage to collect pollen from other plants and to protect the plant from the elements. When the plant is cured, the pistils turn orange or red. When a plant is harvested prematurely the pistils will be white.

Purps

Purps refers to plants that produce a purple pigment in their leaves. This is occasionally achieved by lowering the temperature in the growing environment/room.

Ruderalis

Cannabis ruderalis is a species of cannabis native to cold tundras that is auto-flowering. Generally cannabis plants flower once the light cycle changes to 12 hours of sunlight and 12 hours devoid of light. Though with ruderalis, the plants tend to flower after 30 days, regardless of light cycles. The potency and yields are significantly lower. It's often crossed with an indica, sativa, or hybrid to carry over the auto-flowering characteristics while increasing yield and potency.

Sativa

Cannabis sativa are plants that tend to grow 6-25ft in height, while commonly growing between 8-12ft. The leave are thin and light green, with more yellow pigment for protection against intense sunlight. The branches are long, and are accompanied by equally elongated nugs - sometimes stretching up to 3ft! Though the nugs aren't very dense. The pistils vary from yellow to orange to red. The sativa high is more of a "mind high". It can be uplifting, and energetic. Since sativa's tend to have high THC content, they tend to be quite potent. Hallucinations are possible. An excellent day-time smoke.

Strains

Weed strains are pure breed or hybrid types of Cannabis, specifically developed by growers to highlight certain plant properties.

THC

THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive substance found in cannabis. It's the psychedelic part of the plant that gets you high and paranoid when smoked or eaten in edible form. It's one of many cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, and the most prevalant in high potency strains.

Trichomes

Trichomes are any fine growth on plants, such as hair or glands, that help the plant defend itself against the elements. On cannabis, the trichomes come in three forms, each containing the plants resins (cannabinoids). There are bulbous trichomes, which are the smallest, ranging from 15-30 microns and resembling tiny balls on the plant. More common, the capitate sessile resemble hairs with tiny heads. And the most popular, capitate stalked glands which raise to height of 150-500 microns and have large bulbous heads.

Slang Terms

Brick Weed

Brick weed is a slang term for the process of compacting weed into bricks for efficient transport. The weed is compressed, so when the smoker receives it, nugs will be barely decipherable. Regs, arizonas, schwag, or low quality/poorly grown strains are usually available in brick form.

Dime - Ten

Ten dollars worth of weed. Usually between 0.5-0.7 grams

Dub - Twenty

Frosty

Frosty is an adjective describing flowering cannabis plants or generally nugs covered in a dense foliage of trichomes. The leaf tips or nugs will appear almost white, particularly with flash photography, as if frosted over with a fresh coat of stoney snow.

Ghost / Gutterbomb

Ghosting/gutterbombs is a smoking technique where smoke is kept in the mouth, slowly released, then sucked back in. The smoke releasing tends to look like a ghost, or big ball.

Ghosting can also refer to when you hold the smoke in so long no smoke can be seen on exhalation.

The plant material that falls off nugs in a jar or a dry plant. Generally comprised of sugar leaves and twigs. It usually differs in taste from the original nug/plant as well, and not in a good way.

Shotgun

A shotgun is the act of blowing smoke into another person's mouth. Usually done with a rolled medium, like a blunt, you place your mouth over the cherry and blow smoke out the mouthpiece.

Rolling / Paraphrenalia

Bong

A bong, or waterpipe, is a smoking device used to filter weed smoke with water. It can be made from any airtight container, with a proper downstem and bowl.

Blunt

A blunt is the product of rolling weed inside cigar paper. Occasionally wrapped in a tobacco leaf as well.

Cherry

The cherry refers to the portion of the rolled medium(joint, blunt, etc) that is lit. The fatter the cherry, the bigger the hits.

Chillum

A chillum is a cylinder you smoke from. You put a screen in the front, pack it with weed, and just smoke away. It's one of the simplest smoking setups.

Grinder

A grinder is a device used to break up weed into smaller pieces.

Hemp Wick

A hemp wick is a hemp rope dipped in beeswax. It's used for smoking, as a burning alternative(although it needs a spark itself!). It's one of the cleaner ways to smoke, and you get better flavor from your bud. Buy one of our Hemp Wicks today!

Joint

A joint is the product of rolling weed inside of rolling paper into a smokeable cone-like(or chillum) shape. A joint may also refer to a hole in glass bongs where other glass or bowls are inserted.

Mouth-piece

The mouthpiece refers to the portion of the rolled medium (joint, blunt, etc), or smoking tool(bong, pipe, etc) that you suck the smoke from.

Percolator

A percolator or perc is a small sub chamber inside of a bong, bubbler, or oil rig that provides in-line smoke-water interaction via heat exchange and dissolution. It allows more filtering of the smoke through water. The bubbles generated by the percolator create more surface area for the smoke to cool down in, while providing the smoke at a steadier rate than a regular downstem.

Preroll

A joint that has been rolled ahead of time, often with a rolling machine and low quality shake.

Screen

A screen is usually a metal mesh(brass/titanium) or glass piece you place in a bowl/slide to prevent plant matter and ash from getting pulled into the piece. Some bowls/slides come with screens built in, rather than simply a hole.

Soldering Iron

A soldering iron is a tool that stoners use to vaporize/combust cannabis. It can be used to smoke hash/concentrates, and by design won't burn as much of your THC away. Stoner's who are sensitive to butane gases or ignitions in general tend to use soldering irons for smoking. It's one of the more efficient ways to smoke.

Spliff

A spliff is a joint, usually with tobacco mixed with the weed, and occasionally in a cone shape.

Vaporizer

A vaporizer is a smoking device that heats up to an exact temperature, allow the vaporization of THC, while not burning the bud. It's one of the cleanest way to smoke. Generally cannabis vaporizers operate around 300-400 degrees, the optimal temperature that THC vaporizes.

Hash / Edibles

Bubble Hash

Bubble hash refers to hash extracted with water. The hash is produced sieving cannabis plant matter onto screens (often bubble bags) submerged in water and ice. Also known as full-melt, ice wax, or solventless hash. One of the safest forms of hash, as it's extracted without the use of chemical solvents such as butane.

Budder

Budder is a form of butane hash oil. It ranges from near white to yellow hues in a solidified form generally covered in craters. Unlike shatter, it's not opaque at all. It's created by heating BHO (either wax or shatter) at higher temperatures for longer periods of times. It may even be vacuum purged for an extended period of time. It may also be created by whipping the BHO, however this method is frowned upon, as it's known to trap butane molecules in the concentrate. It's incredible more potent than smoking flowers/nugs. Also known as supermelt, earwax, and crumble.

Cannabutter / Cannaoil

Cannabutter or cannaoil is the product of saturating fat with THC and other cannabinoids. Cooking cannabis with fat converts THC into an edible medium, as eating the raw plant leaves/hash won't elicit as noticeable of a high. Cannabutter can be made with any variety of butter(even margarines). Cannaoil equally so can be made from any oil such as coconut, olive, canola, or grapeseed oils. Raw cannabis leaves and ground nugs are often used, however hash is used as well for higher potency and more stable dosing. Learn how to make cannabutter today!

Caviar

A nug dipped in hash oil, and often rolled in kief.

Concentrate

The term concentrate refers to any extract of THC and/or the other cannabinoids from cannabis. This includes hash, hash oil, BHO, budder, wax, cannabutter/oil, bubble hash, etc.

Dabs

Dabs, also known as dunks and globs are the act of smoking hash/concentrate through a smoking apparatus such as an oil rig or bong with a hash nail or skillet attachment.

Dome

A dome refers to a glass piece that fits over a hash nail, allowing for the smoking of concentrates.

Finger / Scissor Hash

Finger hash is a hash formed from growers rubbing their hands on sticky plants and collecting the resins or trichomes. It's also collected from scissors after trimming. It's one of the oldest forms of hashish. Generally a brown putty.

Firecrackers

Firecrackers are quick and simple way to make cannabutter with crackers. The structure of a firecracker consists of peanut butter/nutella(or any fatty oil), weed, and a sturdy vehicle for the butter (crackers, cookies, etc). The ground ganja is mixed with fat-filled butter, placed between crackers, wrapped in foil, and then heated in an oven or microwave for a short period of time. Learn how to make cannabutter today!

Hash

Hash is the product of concentrating cannabis trichomes. It's a paste-like substance that varies in color(golden, brown, to red) and texture(amberglass, budder, wax, etc).

Hash Oil

Hash oil, despite the name, does not contain hash. It's concentrated THC, usually 70-90%, that's been extracted via solvent.

Hash Nail

A hash nail is the process of smoking hash from a screw or nail. To do it, simply place a screw/nail standing on a flat surface. Place the hash on the nail. And then grab a cup to fit over the nail, light the hash on fire, and place the cup over the nail so it fills with smoke. Once satisfied, turn off the burning hash and simply 'drink' the smoke. It's a more refined method of dropping hash on your stove and smoking it.

Kief

Kief refers to THC that's fallen off the nugs inside of a grinder.

Nectar

A sappy form of butane hash oil, often the product of slightly heating shatter (or leaving it out in the warm sun).

Shatter

Shatter is a stable form of butane hash oil (BHO) that's often golden or amber in color and fairly clear. It's produced by maintaining proper temperatures during the purging portion of BHO extraction. The terpenes of the plant are preserved more properly in this form, allowing for incredibly pure flavour. Winterized shatter is a higher potency version of shatter that lacks plant waxes and lipids often found in concentrates.

Skillet

A skillet is a metal attachment for your bong that allows for dabbing. The metal plate or skillet is heated with a torch and a of hash is placed on top of it. Generally comes with a dome attachment to funnel the smoke into the bong.

Wax

Wax is a concentrated form of cannabis. It's an unstable form of BHO. Often produced due to improper purging techniques or personal preference. Shatter and sometimes even budder will degrade into a wax form when introduced to sunlight/heat.

Other

Tolerance

Tolerance refers to an individuals ability to tolerate the effects of cannabis, either physically or mentally. Physically it's residual level of cannabinoids in a person's body. Mentally it's the stoners personal ability to navigate their heightened perception. A stoner with a lower tolerance will get higher smoking less, while a toker with a high tolerance would have to smoke a lot more to get equally as high. kief.
