This won’t be a step-by-step really, more of a guideline with the important details, on how to take your weed, twigs, anything-with-THC on it — and turn it into cannabis butter. The cannabutter in turn, can be used to make anything that requires butter or would taste good with butter. Bake some brownies, slap some on your pancakes, anything. So let’s get started:
Wtf, how does weed get inside my butter?
THC is soluble in fat, and butter/margarine is full of it. The fat in the butter actually breaks the THC down into a digestible form. If you were to just eat your plant material, you wouldn’t get high.
THC is soluble in oil at low temperatures (100-200 degrees F). Higher heats simply speeds up the process. Avoid temperatures around or above 350 degrees F, as the THC and other cannabinoids will vaporize (resulting in a lower potency).
Ok, so what butter do I use?
Any butter or oil. Cows butter or that fake butter stuff. Olive, vegetable, canola, peanut, and coconut oils. Try to get butter/oil with the highest fat content.
Virgin coconut oil is a favourite for it’s high fat content and short, healthy fat chains.
How much butter and cannabis do I use?
However much you need. Think about saturation, the more butter you use vs plant material, the less potent the butter will be. For example, can drop a quarter of cannabis in a half quart of butter. You’ll get a great product. Or you can use a dime bag of weed and a half quart of butter, and you’ll get buzzed if you’re lucky.
So how do I do it bro?!
The goal is saturating the butter/oil with THC. This may be accomplished in a number of ways, but the main thing to keep in mind is temperature control. The temperature should be as low as possible for the longest time. This will achieve the highest potency. SLOW AND LOW IS THE TEMPO. If your butter is boiling or especially smoking — you’re losing THC. If you’re in a hurry, you can crank up the heat and shorten the time. However, it will make the butter/oil less potent, and more of a body high!
- Crockpot: Turn on the crockpot to the LOW temperature setting. Place the butter or oil inside and allow it to melt. Then place your plant matter (nugs, leaves, twigs, etc) inside and mix it with the butter/oil. Cover the crockpot, and leave on LOW for up to 24 hours.
- Double boiler: Fill a larger pot with water. Place another smaller pot on top of the larger pot filled with water. Fill the smaller pot with the butter/oil. Now put the stacked pots on the stove. Heat both pots until the water in the larger pot boils. Once the butter/oil is melted, place the plant matter (nugs, leaves, twigs, etc) into the butter and mix it well. Cover and watch for 8-12 hours.
- Oven: Place melted butter and plant matter (nugs, leaves, twigs, etc) in an oven safe container, lined with aluminum foil. Cover with container completely with aluminum, then place it in the oven at the lowest setting possible. Heat for 8-12 hours.
After the allotted time, strain the plant material from the butter. Cheesecloths work best. Make sure to squeeze out any liquid from the cannabis. Once it’s done, you can put the butter in a container and let it sit in the fridge until solidified. Or place it in the freezer for long term You can throw away the leftover cannabis, or let it dry and smoke that bitch. It won’t be as potent, but why waste anything?
How do I know it’s fire shit?
Easy. The more potent the butter, the greener it’ll be. Yes, your once yellow butter will actually turn GREEN. If it’s a consistent green throughout, you’ve done an amazing job. If there are different shades of green, like a gradient (light to dark), it’s still potent – but not completely saturated(the dark green on the bottom is actually sediment from the plant material).
