Recently, I had to go somewhere for a long period of time where I knew I couldn’t sneak away for a smoke easily. In a feat of pure procrastination, the night before I prepared a single dose of cannaoil.
Check out our guide on cooking with cannabis
I popped 0.5 grams worth of ganja into the grinder, and promptly into a plastic bag. I slowly added coconut oil until the herb was oversaturated in it. I sealed the bag and left it sitting overnight, allowing the oil to absorb the cannabinoids.
In the morning, to ensure total absorption of THC and such, I threw the oil into the oven in a non-stick mini muffin pan. I had 10-20 minutes before I had to run out the door, so I cranked the oven up to 350 and hopped in the shower. This was my first mistake. Because I didn’t cover/contain the oil mixture, and due to the high heat(cannabis vaporizes at 350 – whoops), the plant matter burned a bit. It left the oil tasting a bit like vaped bud. Luckily I’ve had edibles made from vaped bud, so it wasn’t too terrible. And I was definitely assured most of the THCA was activated, if not burned off.
After over-baking, I popped it into a small bottle, mixed it with soda, and I was good to go. The high was very strong(for the small dose) and more body focused(compared to the sativa-dominant high from smoking).
Had a bit leftover at the end of the day and I wanted to finish it off. I threw in some ice and immediately regretted the decision. I’d completely forgotten the properties of oil. Immediately chunks of white, I’m assuming coconut, rose to the top of the liquid. When I finished forcing it down, you could see residual oil on the walls of the cup. Should have definitely gone with an actual tincture made of alcohol or glycerin if I had the option and time.
Regardless of the mistakes made, it was a successful single dose edible experience. Way better than firecrackers.
