Ohio police chief hospitalized after eating ‘cannabis cake’
(RawStory) An Easter morning craving turned into a cause for concern for the chief of police in Lawrenceville, Ohio, after the cake he ate turned out to be laced with cannabis oil.
“All I can describe is, it was the worst feeling in the world,” Mike Berkemeier told WBNS-TV on Friday. “I thought I was dying.”
Burkemeyer said he ate the entire cake on March 31 after seeing it on his kitchen counter. But when he began feeling ill, he told the station, he drove to his station for help.
“I don’t remember much of the drive here, even though it’s just a few blocks,” he said.
Medics from the local fire department took Burkemeyer to a hospital. Later, he said, his daughter told his fiancee about the cake’s “secret ingredient.” The cake was allegedly brought to the house by a friend’s boyfriend.
Pot Cops – The Bust
It was fascinating to see how the editors and cops portrayed the suspect to be a hardened criminal. And once they bust down his door and shoved guns in his face, he was pretty relaxed about it all considering. All that prep work(snooping around, helicopter costs, time spent) to bust down a few doors, rip up plants, and call it a day. Meanwhile the local meth dealer’s business continues to thrive.
The methods of investigation used by law enforcement seem a bit, well, unconstitutional. I didn’t clip it for copyright concerns, but the first 5 minutes of the show follow officers snooping around private citizen’s property looking for signs of grows. Literally walking up to windows and doors and listening inside. I’m sorry, but if any person does that – badge or not – they’re infringing on the right to personal privacy. How can we call our homes a sanctuary when we have law enforcement sitting outside our windows watching our every move.
Then of course, the correlation of firearms to criminal intent. Suddenly if a free American wants to exercise his right to bear arms, it means they’re a criminal. It’s absurd, as even the cops themselves emphasize how the growers are more vulnerable to home invasion/robbery. Why wouldn’t the growers want to arm themselves in defense?
It’s a crazy idea perpetuated by police and even ordinary people that we have to blame the victim of the crime. He’s growing cannabis ergo it’s his fault he was robbed – he should’ve known it was valuable and kept it safer somehow. They say the same when a woman gets raped. She shouldn’t have been dressed that slutty, she was asking for it, why did she walk down that dangerous neighborhood? Crimes shouldn’t be committed in the first place. It’s not my fault I have a nice car, why should I be blamed if some scumbag steals it?
I also didn’t show something incredibly troubling. The officers begin to search the grow room and find a scale, as well as stacks of brown paper bags. Deputy Destroy-Dank explained that the scale and bags were pieces of a puzzle that the police had to put together. Obviously, he was insinuating that owning a scale means you’re a drug dealer. Nevermind growers simply wanting to verify yields post harvest, possibly inform their designated patients of the quantity, or maybe they simply wish to weight out their doses. Most people internationally measure their recipes in weight, prompting the use of a scale. Sorry if I don’t measure my joints in teaspoons officer. And then there’s the mention of the brown paper bags. It shows complete ignorance on the cops part. Brown paper bags are used for curing nugs after harvest/trimming. They’re the cheapest and easiest way to get a great cure. And honestly, what drug dealer uses brown paper bags to transmit their goods? What are they, soccer moms?
This show is proving to be another perfect example of how local law enforcement have fallen into the enticing hands of prohibition, becoming cowboys against cannabis and criminals.

Don’t Simply Decriminalize, Legalize It!
A clip from The Union, one of the best cannabis documentaries out there.
I was re-watching The Union again today and this particular segment came up. In light of recent discussions in the ask box about decriminalization, I thought it’d be prudent to post this. This clip perfectly encapsulates the illogical nature of decriminalizing instead of simply legalizing it.
